Calculate exactly how much gravel, crushed stone, or rock you need — in cubic yards, tons, and bags. Supports driveways, pathways, landscaping, and drainage with full cost and delivery estimates.
Gravel is one of the most versatile and cost-effective materials in construction and landscaping. From driveway bases to decorative garden paths, crushed stone and gravel serve both functional and aesthetic purposes. But ordering the right amount is surprisingly tricky — gravel is heavy, delivery is expensive, and coming up short means another delivery charge. This guide helps you calculate accurately the first time.
| Type | Size | Weight (t/yd³) | Cost/Ton | Best Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Crushed Stone #57 | 3/4" | 1.40 | $30–$50 | Driveways, drainage, base |
| Crusher Run | Mixed fines–1.5" | 1.35 | $20–$40 | Road base, compacted surfaces |
| Pea Gravel | 3/8" | 1.40 | $35–$55 | Pathways, patios, drainage |
| River Rock | 1–3" | 1.35 | $40–$80 | Decorative, dry creek beds |
| Decomposed Granite | Fine–1/4" | 1.50 | $30–$50 | Pathways, patio base |
| Lava Rock | 3/4–2" | 0.75 | $40–$60 | Decorative, mulch replacement |
The required depth depends on the application. Decorative landscaping: 2–3 inches. Pathways: 2–3 inches over compacted base. Patio base: 4–6 inches of compacted gravel. Driveway (single layer): 4 inches minimum. Driveway (proper 3-layer): 12 inches total (6" base + 3" middle + 3" top). French drain: 6–12 inches of washed stone around the pipe.
Gravel is sold by the ton or cubic yard. Most suppliers sell by the ton. A standard dump truck holds 10–15 tons (6–8 cubic yards), while a tandem-axle truck holds 18–22 tons (10–14 cubic yards). Delivery fees range from $50–$150 per load depending on distance. For large projects, ask about "belly dump" trucks which spread gravel as they drive — saving significant labor.
Landscape fabric (geotextile) prevents gravel from sinking into soft soil and reduces weed growth. Always use under decorative gravel, pathways, and garden beds. Optional under driveway gravel if subgrade is well-compacted clay. Skip it for drainage applications (it can clog and impede water flow). Install fabric with 6-inch overlap at seams and secure with landscape staples every 12 inches. Budget $0.10–$0.25 per sq ft for standard fabric, or $0.30–$0.60 for commercial-grade geotextile.
